COVID-19 & Seattle SSB Fund

Like everyone, we hope you are staying healthy, socially connected and physically distant. This is certainly a time where basic needs become paramount. To that end, we are cheered by the recent actions of the Seattle City Council and Mayor Durkan to transfer $5 million from the Sweetened Beverage Tax fund to a new food voucher program that will provide critical groceries to thousands of families across Seattle.

Putting food on the table and providing access to other grocery items is what’s needed now as we wade through this pandemic. So congrats to the political leadership in Seattle for being proactive and investing SBT funds directly in low-income families in this time of extreme need. The Sweetened Beverage Tax Community Advisory Board, a critical place to amplify community voice, was also supportive (see their letter here). The text of the enacted bill can be found here and media on this important effort can be found here.
