Support the SWEET Act

On July 30th, Representative Rosa DeLauro introduced the Sugar-Sweetened Beverages Tax Act of 2014 (SWEET Act) – a bill that levies an excise tax of one cent per 4.2 grams (one teaspoon) of caloric sweetener.

Sugary drinks are a leading cause of obesity today. This critically important legislation would raise in the order of $10 billion a year for soda-related disease prevention programs via the Prevention and Public Health Fund established by the Affordable Care Act, and would make a modest dent in consumption as we have seen in Mexico.

COPC has joined the list of bill supporters and so can you.

Please consider having your group or organization endorse this legislation. Contact Kelly Horton in Rosa DeLauro’s office. Her email is Kelly.Horton@mail.house.gov.

As an individual, you can call your Representative and ask them to sign on to this legislation to combat diabetes, obesity, tooth decay, and other diet-related diseases.
