Study: Half of U.S. adults will be obese by 2030
Are we getting tired of these headlines yet? The renowned Brit medical journal, “The Lancet”, has published a special series on the issue of obesity. And while the headline factoid is rather startling, as well as all the data about health and economic impacts, the more important messages are found in the assessing potential solutions. We do concur with the Lancet authors that assert that all levels of government need to step to this issue and that food and beverage industry self-regulation alone is simply not the answer. We quote from the lead editorial that posited five important premises: “Five, a systems approach is needed with multiple sectors involved.” We heartily concur and point to our most recent Action Alerts that called for engagement in food marketing and food policy in schools – two different sectors that need and demand strong federal government leadership and regulation. We need to continue to press upon our government partners at all levels to do the right thing and work with us to proactively create and recreate sectors that can make the healthy choice the easier choice.
