Mayor Murray’s Address on 2-21-17
We were excited today to hear Mayor Murray announce his plan to use revenues raised from a sugary drink tax to help the Education Action Plan for Seattle’s children. Sugary drinks are a major contributor to our country’s alarming rates of diabetes, heart and liver disease, and tooth decay – conditions which disproportionately affect minority and low-income families – and the biggest consumers are adolescents and youth. Sugary drink taxes have been shown to curb consumption by raising awareness about the harmful effects of sugary beverages and encouraging healthier beverage choices. This tax also has the potential to reduce health disparities among communities that are heaviest hit by health conditions caused by sugary drinks, and potentially curb the $190 billion that our country spends annually on treating preventable chronic diseases.
Sugary drink taxes are an effective way to raise money for important community programs with the added benefit of improving health and saving lives. We look forward to working with the Mayor and the City Council as they debate enactment and implementation of this vital and significant proposal.
