Health, Safety Key to Transportation
Tuesday, February 12th – Olympia, WA
Today is Transportation Advocacy Day! We are in Olympia asking our legislators to recognize the link between health and safety, and transportation. Please join COPC and our fellow advocates in showing your support for two bills that would improve the health of our communities.
HB 1233 (Transportation and Health) (Jinkins) – This bill would make health a goal in transportation planning in Washington state by requiring that the state take the health and safety of its citizens into account in all future transportation projects.
Today at 3:30pm there will be a public hearing in front of the House Committee on Transportation. Contact Committee members today by email, phone or letter, and tell them that you support HB 1233.
You can view our letter to the Committee for talking points on HB 1233 here.
SB 5506 (Safe Routes to Schools) (Billig) – This bill would protect statewide funding for Safe Routes to Schools – a program that enables communities to establish infrastructure for children to bike and walk to school. Studies show that children who bike and walk to school can concentrate better in class. The numbers also show that pupil transportation costs total $390-400 million in Washington state and may be at risk. Supporting Safe Routes to School programs can support daily physical activity while also alleviating the fiscal burden on school districts for yellow school bus costs.
On Wednesday, February 13th at 3:30pm there will be a hearing in front the Senate Committee on Transportation. Contact Committee members today by email, phone or letter, and tell them that you support SB 5506.
