Federal Healthy Food Alerts

COPC needs your support for a number of healthy foods developments that are happening on the federal level this month:
- Agricultural Appropriations: The Senate, and likely the House of Representatives will vote on the Agricultural Appropriations bill as early as tomorrow. Help us oppose efforts to weaken school food and WIC standards, by signing the Change.org petition today.
- Comments Due for Nutrition Facts Panel and Serving Size Rules: The FDA has proposed new rules for the Nutrition Facts Panel and Serving Sizes, and is accepting comments by June 2nd. Through the Center for Science and the Public Interest, the National Alliance for Nutrition and Activity has released model comments for both. Contact Laura McCleery at CSPI by June 1st if your organization would like to view and sign on to the model comments. Click here to submit your own personal comments directly to the FDA.
- Stop the Subsidizing of Unhealthy Marketing to Kids: U.S. Senators Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) and Tom Harkin (D-IA) recently introduced the Stop Subsidizing Childhood Obesity Act which would prohibit companies for applying for tax deductions for their unhealthy marketing to kids under age 14. Revenue generated from eliminating these deductions would go to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Fresh Fruits and Vegetables program. Contact Kate Klimczak at CSPI by May 30th if your organization would like to view and sign onto letters of support for this bill. As an individual, you can help by writing your own letter of support to your legislator, or by getting the word out about the bill on social media.
