COPC supports the proposed Sugary Drink tax ordinance

Let’s show Mayor Murray and the Seattle City Council how much COPC supports the proposed Sugary Drink tax ordinance!

Seattle is poised to join other cities, counties, and First Nations that have passed a sugary drink tax.  Sugar-sweetened beverages have been linked to weight gain, obesity, heart disease, and tooth decay, among other serious health conditions. Seattle Healthy Kids Coalition is an effort to pass a sugar tax on distributors of sugary drinks in Seattle.TAX FACTS:  This is not a tax on local retailers or businesses. This is a tax on distributors of sugary drinks, the handful of companies that contract with beverage makers to distribute their products in the City of Seattle.  The proposed tax is expected to raise $16 million per year.

WHAT WILL IT FUND? Revenue raised through this tax will be primarily focused on eliminating educational disparities, Birth-to-Five programs, and expanding healthy food access.
