Act Today for the “Healthiest Next Generation”

UPDATE: A Senate Health Care Committee vote on 2SHB 2643 (Healthiest Next Generation) is expected tomorrow, Thursday February 27th. There is still time to express your support to your legislators!

February 24, 2014

Earlier today, the Childhood Obesity Prevention Coalition provided testimony to the Senate in support of a critical bill that would make obesity prevention a strong priority for Washington state. With the help of your letters and phone calls, the Healthiest Next Generation bill (HB 2643) passed the House one week ago with solid support (68-28). Now, we need your help in getting this bill out of the Senate Health Care Committee.

A Senate policy committee vote is expected as early as tomorrow, which is why we need you to take action TODAY.

You can show your support for this bill by writing or calling your own legislator personally, or by writing all members of the Senate Health Care Committee on behalf of your organization:

What does the Healthiest Next Generation (2SHB 2643) do?
In short, this bill will establish the Governor’s Council for the Healthiest Next Generation to identify policy-related action plans and funding recommendations that protect children’s health. Furthermore, a strategic Work Group will be staffed with representatives from the Department of Health, Department of Early Learning and the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction to work across three focus critical areas for obesity prevention: healthy early learning environments, healthy school environments, and breastfeeding-friendly environments. To learn more about the bill, see the bill report and Governor’s policy brief.
